Diane Martin was unfairly dismissed from her job for standing up to an incident of harassment which happened one day before she was guaranteed a permanent job at the company.

The Equal Opportunities Commission (EoC) is the leading agency working to eliminate sex discrimination, has released a study showing black women face a double whammy at work.

Mrs Martin told her current temping agency about the embarrassing scenario and was advised to talk privately to her boss about the incident. He apologised and it appeared that the matter was fine.

The EOC found that even though ethnic minority women are more likely to be qualified to degree level, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Black Caribbean women are between two to four times more likely to be unemployed and are more likely to be concentrated in certain jobs.

Mrs Martin also expressed that when she looked for Managerial jobs that she was qualified to do – she would not be called back for an interview.

This was the reason for Mrs Martin embarked on temping work; shockingly she has only had one permanent job in 12 years as a head of year in a school.

Mrs Martin added that she took some time off her last job due to being epileptic and was told that this was fine and that she could take as much time off as necessary.

Mrs Martin believes that this was due to the previous sexist comment that she thought was resolved. Her boss' only excuse for dismissal was because she was absent from work.

She wants to introduce a short course, focussing on development work with ethnic minority children to give them good direction and advise on their career paths.

The EOC are establishing the new Gender Equality Duty which will be put in place in April 2007 – This should enable women and men to enjoy equal pay in the future.
