RE JENICE Armstrong's "Black men who fly to Rio" column (Sept. 19): I am so tired of black... Letters | FLYING DOWN TO RIO: TWO
They are the only men who do this. I have never heard a white man put down a white woman to justify his reasons for dealing with a woman of color. I have never heard it from Asian or Hispanic men. But from Kanye West to Wesley Snipes, they all said something negative about black women.
In my opinion, they have given in to the false illlusion of Americans' standard of beauty or the ideal woman. Black women are no different from Italian women, who are abrupt and speak their minds, but you never hear anything bad about them coming from their men.
Why are we called gold-diggers for wanting to make sure the men we choose will be able to provide financial support in the relationship? (I did not say total support - but what's wrong with that, if it works for some people?) Why is it sensible for other women but not for us? Isn't my mind, body and spirit worth it also?
Don't be fooled into thinking that the women in Brazil are only the way you described them because of the money. This sex-tour angle aside (I've never heard of that), women in Brazil are some of the most genuinely accommodating, sweet and affectionate women on the planet. I went quite a few years ago, and I did not want to come back.
Your stature in America has nothing to do with it. These women are raised by their mothers to take care of a man. We partied with women who were natives of Rio, and it was never about sex. Once you show yourself to be a genuine person, and they get comfortable around you, they make you feel like you are the only man on this earth.
And they aren't just demure robots who have no personal goals, these ladies were confident, career-minded, independent women! I know there are PLENTY of beautiful black sisters here who are just as capable, but for men who go there, it's an amazing experience. Don't think we are looking for an alternative, but you have to admit some women can be ruthlesss when it comes to the bottom line.
