For the 13th season, the show's producers have split contestants by ethnic background, with tribes separated into groups of African-Americans, Asian-Americans, Hispanics and caucasians.
"Every season, we are just trying to look for a way to keep the show fresh," said Survivor executive Producer Tom Shelly from the United States.
"This was born out of taking to heart some of the criticism we have had in the past that maybe the show didn't have as much diversity as the audience would like.
Survivor: Cook Islands has caused a lot of controversy in the United States and is bound to do the same when it premieres on the Nine Network in Australia next week.
"Very few people know even who the final players are and really nobody knows who the final winner is because the final voting is done with locked off cameras that nobody sees."
