LOS ANGELES, Oct. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Brides magazine's annual nuptial survey recently reported that December is the top month that men choose to pop the question to their beloved (with November trailing in second). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, interracial marriages have more than doubled over the past decade, providing interesting and fun ethnic traditional proposal options for men upon bended knee.
* On the island of Tausug in the Philippines, it is considered honorable for a man to abduct his bride-to-be and take her away to be married "against her will." For men of the Asian persuasion, Rena Puebla, founder of Renellie cake toppers, suggests a modern version that "might include a pre-arranged surprise getaway in the middle of the night to a romantic spot. * Among the Mande people of Africa, a bride-to-be is taught a secret "married-woman language" that no man or unmarried woman is able to understand. Renellie co-founder Ellie Genuardi suggests that an African American man might construct a proposal with his mother-in-law-to-be. "She might make the proposal in gibberish and he, in English!" * In Peru, a Latin gentleman will stand outside of his sweetheart's home with a Mariachi band singing love songs to her. If she turns on the lights, her answer is yes. Puebla loves this idea and says it "translates beautifully still today, exactly as is." * In 19th century England, a man would deliver his glove to his intended's home. Should she wear the glove to church the following Sunday, he would be assured of her acceptance to marry. "A man of European descent might consider something similar," says Puebla, "but a friend or messenger might be better than the Pony Express! He might write his proposal on a note card in the box and include a return note with simple 'yes' or 'no' checkboxes."
The idea for interracial, interchangeable wedding cake toppers sprang up when Puebla, a Black woman engaged to an Asian man, was unable to find a suitable wedding cake topper for her upcoming wedding. She decided to take matters into her own hands. "When two people fall in love and become engaged," says Puebla. "There is so much going on in their lives that the last thing they should have to worry about is the unfamiliar and awkward representation of themselves on the cake."
