QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must have a MSW and DSW/PhD from an accredited university, two years post-master’s practice experience, and knowledge of and experience in social work practice with individuals, families, groups, and organizations. Practice, teaching, and research experience with ethnic populations is highly desirable, particularly those ethnic populations of the Southwest, Latinos/as, African Americans, Asian American, and/or Native Americans. Teaching experience at the graduate level and experience in community-based practice is desired. Applicants should have awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Full-time tenure-track position with the primary responsibility of teaching graduate social work practice courses from a transcultural perspective. Candidate must address the needs of a student population of great diversity—in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language and academic preparation—through course materials, teaching strategies and advisement. Responsibilities may also include teaching other graduate or undergraduate social work courses, serving as a field practicum liaison, and advising students. In addition to teaching, candidates are expected to engage in scholarly and professional activities such as publishing and seeking external funding, participating in curriculum development, and providing service to students and the University. A candidate’s scholarly and professional endeavors should support the transcultural mission of the combined undergraduate and graduate social work programs.
The Social Work Program at San José State University was established in 1969 with a special focus on training practitioners for work with the Spanish-speaking population. Although this focus has been maintained, the current program mission has been broadened to include work with other people of color in the region and emphasize cross-cultural perspectives in social work practice.
